Gustav MAHLER: Symphony No. 5
Singaporean maestro Kahchun Wong has quickly become one of the brightest stars in the orchestral world. He was the winner of the 2016 Gustav Mahler conducting competition, chosen by Gustavo Dudamel to be Conducting Fellow for the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2017, appointed chief conductor of the Nürenberg Symphony in 2018, and made his debut with the New York Philharmonic in 2019. The Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra is honored to invite him to the podium to lead two pillars of the symphonic repertoire, Mozart’s classic Symphony No. 25 and Mahler’s iconic Fifth.

Dance is an integral part of Spain’s cultural heritage. Join Maestro José-Luis Novo for an all-Spanish concert that explores the full gamut of dance styles, from the Malagueña and Habanera in Ravel’s Rapsodie espagnole to De Falla’s Flamenco-inspired ballet, The Three-Cornered Hat. The program is rounded out by the Asian premiere of Oscar Navarro’s cinematic new horn concerto, Connection, performed by one of the world’s foremost horn virtuosi, Javier Bonet.

American guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel has built an international legacy as the preeminent jazz-guitar voice of his generation, and Spaniard Jorge Pardo is a legendary flamenco jazz musician. Best known for his exhilarating tone poems and expansive operas, Richard Strauss was a superstar composer of the lush late-Romantic style. This concert features two of his most mature works. First, renowned horn soloist Radovan Vlatkovic performs the second horn concerto like no-one else can. Then, be swept away by the suite from Strauss’s best-loved opera Der Rosenkavalier which depicts life in the glittering ballrooms of early 20th-century Vienna.

We begin with the frivolous and jazzy Piano Concerto in G major and finish with the shimmering orchestrations of Daphnis and Chloé, Suite No. 2. In the middle is Ravel’s depiction of a ballroom in the Vienese Imperial Court.

Dvořák and Grieg were alike in that they wrote music that reflected that strongly reflected the culture and folk music of their homelands. Dvořák’s sixth symphony has been called his “pastorale” symphony as it radiates the beauty and character of the Czech countryside. Grieg, a native of Norway, begins his only piano concerto with the attention-grabbing four-octave piano flourish it has become famous for but what follows are tenderly lyric melodies purely Norwegian in nature. The program opens with Colourframe by contemporary Swiss composer Renzo Rota.

Join the Thailand Philharmonic for a program of audience favorites. Copland’s instantlyrecognizable fanfare was written in celebration of everyday people. Beethoven’s last piano concerto, the fifth, came to be known as the Emperor concerto for its regal size and romanticism. Finally on the program is Tchaikovsky’s dramatic fourth symphony, written during a difficult period of his life. He described the opening fanfare as “the fatal power which prevents one from attaining the goal of happiness".

Join the Thailand Philharmonic for a program of audience favorites. Copland’s instantlyrecognizable fanfare was written in celebration of everyday people. Beethoven’s last piano concerto, the fifth, came to be known as the Emperor concerto for its regal size and romanticism. Finally on the program is Tchaikovsky’s dramatic fourth symphony, written during a difficult period of his life. He described the opening fanfare as “the fatal power which prevents one from attaining the goal of happiness".

Strauss was the master of the orchestral tone poem, a single-movement work that uses the orchestra to tell a story without words. Many of his works described a character in the prime of his live: Don Juan, Till Eulenspiegel, Ein Heldenleben. However, Death and Transfiguration tells a different story, one of a man during his final hours. After Strauss composed it he commented “It occurred to me to present in the form of a tone poem the dying hours of a man who had striven toward the highest idealistic aims, maybe indeed those of an artist.” The concert opens with some of the most difficult music ever written for piano performed by Italian virtuoso Paolo Restani.

Following the success of last year’s Peter and the Wolf concert, this year we are excited to present to you the new musical tale Sudsakorn, a story from Sunthorn Phu’s epic Phra Aphai Mani. Having collaborated in creating a number of musicals, Thanapol Setabrahmana and Napisi Reyes will again join in producing this new show for your family. Semathai Marionette returns with their spectacular troupe of puppets, marionettes, and actors. The concert also features works that introduce young people to the orchestra.

Our own Founding Chief Conductor, Maestro Gudni Emilsson, will lead the orchestra in a concert of fun and familiar music. There will be limited seats available in every section of the orchestra. Simply post a video to YouTube of yourself performing the required audition material. As many participants as possible will be chosen to be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime experience. All ages are welcome to apply. Instructions will be posted on the Thailand Phil website and Facebook page.

Gustav MAHLER: Symphony No. 6
The feeling of anticipation and wonder accompanies the start of every new journey. Maestro Alfonso Scarano opens the door to Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra’s landmark fifteenth season with the aptly titled New Horizons by Narong Prangcharoen, a sparkling work premiered earlier in the year at Beijing’s Modern Music Festival. Nicknamed “Tragic” for its mournful finale, Mahler’s Sixth nevertheless breathed fresh life into the soundscape of the modern concert hall with ingenious use of percussion instruments evoking the composer’s idyllic love for nature.

The ballet music of Stravinsky was considered revolutionary when it was first performed. One-hundred years later it still stands as monumental in the symphonic repertoire. Experience this ground-breaking music as you never have before, with breathtaking motion graphics, projected in sync with the music. Italian bass-clarinet virtuoso Rocco Parisi performs Narong Prangcharoen’s colorful Concerto for Bass Clarinet.
Projected motion graphics are designed by the faculty Communication Design Program in the Fine and Applied Arts Division at Mahidol University International College.

The work is based on three ideas: Scriabin’s soul in the orgy of love, the realization of a fantastical dream, and the glory of his own art. The massive forces employed—double the usual amount of woodwinds and brass—make this a sonic experience like no other. The first half of the program begins more intimately with three vignettes for violin and orchestra performed by Italian violinist Emmanuele Baldini.

It has been said that invisible threads are the strongest ties, and so it is with this program. The first half is tied together by two threads: two composers and soloist all from Poland, and two world premieres. The Thailand Phil proudly presents its own Grzegorz Grzeszczyk in a groundbreaking new work for bass clarinet and orchestra, and also presents an exciting new work by our own Music Director, Narong Prangcharoen. Rounding out the first half is a short vignette from Francis Ford Coppola’s film Dracula. On the second half Maestro Delta David Gier will bring to life Shostakovich’s triumphant Fifth Symphony.

Jean SIBELIUS: Symphony No. 1, Op. 39
“For me music begins where words cease. The germ and fertilization of my symphonies have been solely musical.”
These were the thoughts of Sibelius as he composed his seven symphonies. On this program we hear his first symphony, composed in a time when most composers favored single-movement works that told a story. Sibelius, taking his inspiration from the symphonies of Tchaikovsky, pressed the symphonic genre forward writing by music for its own sake. This is contrasted by Richard Strauss’s Duet Concertino which tells the story of Beauty and the Beast as represented by the clarinet and bassoon. The program begins with the world premiere of a work written especially for the Thailand Philharmonic by Italian composer Massimo Capogrosso.
