It was in Leipzig that Johann Sebastian Bach spent 27 immensely productive years as Kantor and Director of Music at St Thomas’ Church – from 1723 until death in 1750. In this Church he created many of his greatest masterpieces including the St. Matthew and St. John Passions and the Great B minor Mass. He and many members of his large family were buried in the churchyard.
The six Brandenburg Concertos for various groups and combinations of instruments were composed by Bach between 1711 and 1720 before his move to Leipzig. Dedicated to the Margrave of Brandenburg, they represent a in the history of the Baroque concerto, as well as being among the most universally admired and popular of all Bach’s works. |
