The Bangkok Symphony Orchestra Foundation has announced that the Piano Recital scheduled to be given by Chinese pianist Lang Lang on December 11th has had to be postponed due to a change in the artist’s touring schedule.
Mrs. Atchara Tejapaibul, Executive Director of the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra Foundation, said that a last-minute change in the artist’s schedule meant he could not longer perform in Bangkok as contracted. However, the Foundation and the artist’s New York management are actively pursing a replacement date. This will be announced in due course.
Mrs. Tejapaibul added the Foundation has been extremely fortunate in obtaining the services of one of the world’s most celebrated international singers to perform the concluding recital of the Series “A Tribute in Memory of HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana: Great Artists of the World 2008” on December 11th, the American soprano Barbara Bonney.
Universally acclaimed as a superlative concert artist and one of the greatest singers of her generation, Barbara Bonney has performed with most of the world’s major orchestras and conductors, including the Vienna Philharmonic under conductors Seiji Ozawa and Riccardo Muti, and the Berlin Philharmonic under Claudio Abbado.

In opera, Barbara Bonney has appeared regularly at the world’s five top opera houses – the Vienna State Opera, New York’s Metropolitan Opera, Milan’s La Scala, the Paris Opera and London’s Royal Opera. She has also been featured in opera and concerts at the Salzburg Festival. Her ‘signature’ role of Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss can be seen on two DVD’s – in recordings made at the Vienna State Opera with Carlos Kleiber and at the Royal Opera with Sir Georg Solti.
Her extensive discography of over 90 recordings for Decca, DGG, EMI and Teldec includes complete recordings of Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute and Clemenza di Tito, Franz Lehar’s The Merry Widow, Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, Beethoven’s Fidelio and Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus. She has also made 15 CD’s of lieder and art songs, including critically acclaimed performances of works by Schumann (partnered by pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy), Richard Strauss, Mozart, Wolf, Mendelssohn and Schubert.
Barbara Bonney’s programme for Bangkok includes songs by Richard Strauss, Schumann and Grieg. She will conclude the recital with a selection of popular arias from the world of operetta which are featured on her CD “Im Chambre Séparée - The Operetta Album”. This was one of her many recordings nominated for a Grammy Award. Ms. Bonney will be partnered by pianist Fernando Araujo.
The 2008 “Great Artists” Series is presented by the National Culture Commission of the Ministry of Culture and the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra Foundation, with generous assistance from B. Grimm & Co. R.O.P. and Credit Suisse.
