We are delighted to announce that Niu’s on Silom, jazz club, wine bar and restaurant will hold NIU’s 1st International Bangkok Jazz Festival on December 11 & 12, 2009.
The open-air festival sees two nights of world class local and international jazz and blues music set in the atmospheric European-Style piazza at Baan Silom Arcade. It’s a beautiful location to enjoy the cool season weather.
The festival ambiance will be enhanced by food and drink supplied by Niu’s on Silom and our fine dining Italian restaurant Concerto.
Each night has four performances:
Friday 11th December 2009
Koh Mr Saxman (Thailand) Koh has taken jazz saxophone playing in Thailand to new heights, playing a mix of standards and his own finely crafted songs. The track ‘Rush Hour’, from the first of his five albums, won Best Instrumental Song of the Year in 2003.
Phil Wiggins and Corey Harris (USA) Harmonica player Wiggins and guitarist Harris, an ex-New Orleans street singer, have an authentic old time blues sound that is fast disappearing from the music scene. Harris starred in the Martin Scorcese film Feel Like Going Home, the story of the blues from its African origins. Wiggins and Harris play roots music at its best.
Gwilym Simcock At the young age of 28, Simcock is already a multi award-winning pianist. He’s been compared Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau, and no less a name than Chick Corea has labelled him: “An original. A creative genius.”
Gwilym will bring a trio to the festival, playing his unique blend of classical inflected jazz that in the future will surely see him rise to be one of the greats of the genre.
James Carter (USA) This virtuoso sax player blew Bangkok away at his NIU’s gig in August, with several attending musicians calling him the best they’d ever seen. He plays soprano, tenor and baritone saxes, as well as flute and bass clarinet, all seemingly with the same ferocious attack and broad palette of sounds. Yet, he can be intensely lyrical, too. Time Magazine says his “muscular sound wraps itself around the listener like an anaconda”, while the Los Angeles Times calls him “The Jimi Hendrix of the saxophone”.
Saturday 12th December 2009
Francois Lindemann (Switzerland) leads musicians of multi-ethnic backgrounds to build an exhilarating hybrid of cross-cultural jazz using a mix of traditional instruments.
Playing in the band alongside Francois at the festival will be legendary Thai sax player Tewan Sapsangyakorn, himself a master of blending musical forms. He’s appeared widely on the festival circuit in Asia, Europe and the US with his band, Tewan Novel Jazz, who combine Thai and International instruments, with Tewan, himself, playing violin and Thai flute, as well as sax.
Eden Brent (USA) Critics rave about Brent’s “whiskey-smoke” voice and describe her as “Bessie Smith meets Diana Krall meets Janis Joplin”. She lives beside the Mississippi River, close to a blues heritage that saw her perform alongside BB King at the 2005 US Presidential Inauguration. Chip Eagle, publisher of Blues Revue, says, “In Eden’s huge playing and singing you can hear the ghosts of the Mississippi in a duet with the future of the blues.”
Chris Potter (USA) One of the finest young sax soloists in contemporary jazz, Potter has played with many of the world’s leading names, including Herbie Hancock, John Scofield and Dave Holland, and featured prominently on Steely Dan’s Grammy-winning album Two Against Nature.
Richard Bona (USA) Born in Cameroon and now living in New York, bass player and vocalist Bona is known as the “African Sting”. He brings a hard funk jostle to jazz playing that is also peppered with bossa nova, afro-beat and traditional song. He’s played with a huge list of star names, including Steve Gadd, Pat Metheny and Michael Brecker… and no wonder: the Los Angeles Times says, “Imagine an artist with Jaco Pastorious’s virtuosity, George Benson’s vocal fluidity, Joao Gilberto’s sense of song and harmony, all mixed up with African culture. Ladies and gentlemen, we bring you Richard Bona!” He’s that good.
