THE LIGHTHOUSE TRIO |
Tim Garland was still a novice when he was asked to join Ronnie Scott’s band at the tender age of 23, playing dates across England and northern Europe. Such experience allowed Garland to quickly build a successful career as one of the most recognizable tenor/soprano saxophone players in the circuit. He’s a chief player in Chick Corea’s band, Origin, and also fronts the Celtic/Jazz fusion band the Lammas.
Garland has also played with some of the U.K.’s most distinguished jazz musicians such as guitarist Ralph Towner, John Taylor, trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, Pete King, and clarinetist John Dankworth. He released Enter the Fire in 1998; Made By Walking followed two years later. He now has over 10 CDs as a band leader.
Garland’s award winning project from 2005, entitled If The Sea Replied, marked the birth of this unique trio, where they were joined by a string orchestra, and recorded magical solo improvisations inside a lighthouse. The Lighthouse Trio has since become Garland’s main focus for live performance.
The core trio, Asaf Sirkis (playing a custom built percussion set of frame drums, bass Udu, Hang drum and more), Garlandon saxes and bass clarinet, and celebrated young pianist Gwilym Simcock, are an orchestra unto themselves. They mix a range of rhythms from the Middle East, Spain and South America with highly interactive and lyrical jazz.
