Show Synopsis: The Legend of Angkor Wat
Scene 1: Exploring the deserted empire
In 1860, Alexandre Henri Mouhot, a French naturalist, made a journey of exploration into the regions of Siam and Laos. When his group entered Cambodia, Henri heard from the villagers about the great temple of splendid beauty, believed to be built by the hands of gods. And finally the mysterious, legendary temple hidden in the dense forest lied before his eyes. While he explored the temple he was stunned by the astonishing high bas-relief of sand stoned “Apsara”, who was the one that brought him to the past and explored the history.

Scene 2: The legendary origin of the Khmer empire
Henri lies alone unconsciously on an island. He gains consciousness when hearing the sound of a galloping horse. In the soft light, a lady with a look of the apsara in the bas- reliefs appears. Henri shakes his head confusingly, uncertain whether he is in a dream. Apsara told him that his wish had come true and she will take him to experience the beauty of our civilization - starting from the legendary origin of the Khmer empire, the love story between Preah Thaong and Neang Nagi, the daughter of the king of nagas. * In this scene audiences will witness a wedding procession scene.

Scene 3: King Suryavarman II and the great Angkor Wat.
Then Apsara brought Henri back to the time when the monument was constructed by thousands of workers. The moon shines in the sky, reflecting the outline of the temple. The sound of construction echoes around. Henri sees slaves cutting a huge stone with great difficulty. Part by part, the picture of the perfectly completed Angkor Wat is shown on the water screen.
Scene 4: The glorious period of the Angkor empire
Apsara casts a magic. The picture of the Khmer empire during the reign of Suryavarman II appears. It happens at the central market where people were selling vegetables, fruits and goods. On one side of the stage children play a game. On the other side elderly people make beautiful offerings from flower.
Apsara and Henri walk around to observe the lives of the people. Henri looks around to see children smiling, everyone looking happy, singing and dancing. He is impressed with the beautiful culture of the kingdom. Then, Apsara leads Henri to where the New Year celebration takes place. They stand with the people as they witness the spectacular procession of King Suryavarman II. At the royal pavilion, the King seats to watch the firework show.

Scene 5: The legend of Apsara
After this amazing trip he was then curious about Apsara, whether she was once the spirit of the Angkor Princess. The answer surprised him. He was she was born from the Churning of the Sea of Milk and promised to show her creation myth but in return, he must promise to bring life back into this great Angkor ruin that he had witnessed
In the Churning of the Ocean of Milk scene, carved Apsaras on the walls become alive and come out to dance. Henri watches them excitedly. He tries to search for Apsara who conjures this scene but when the show finishes, all Apsaras disappear into the wall.
Henri runs around looking for Apsara. The light fades. The temple and the area around are again covered with thick forest like the first time Henri arrives.
Scene 6: Back to present
Henri is back to the place where he loses consciousness. He looks around confused. His colleagues notice that Henri stares at the bas-reliefs for a long time. They walk to him and were about to touch the Apsara on the wall when Henri stops them and said “We should not disturb her. Our great duty is waiting for us. No matter how tiring and difficult it is, we must try to accomplish. Let's go.” Henri leads the group into the temple. The carving of Apsara on the wall smiles. Light illuminates the temple displaying its great grandeur. |
