INTRODUCTION AND OVERVIEW OF 17TH BANGKOK'S INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF DANCE AND MUSIC
…………………………………..

It's the great spirit of Bangkok, a vibrant world… It's a festival with a vision… and it promises to scale new heights this year. A festival that was founded to commemorate the 6th cycle birthday of His Majesty the King, it is now poised to celebrate yet another momentous occasion: the 5th cycle birthday of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, who is also Royal Patron of the festival.  In Her honour, the festival opens for the first time ever with a sumptuously-mounted classical Chinese Opera, The Butterfly Lovers, on an epic scale.

This is only the beginning of a whole repertoire of world-class performances by artistes from around the globe in the most dazzling productions. There are three magical ballets, powerful operas and truly magnificent symphony orchestra from Russia's legendary theatres; plus a historic symphony orchestra from the capital of the Czech Republic. Adding to it are dramatic contemporary dance performances from Brazil, France and Germany.

Then there is sensuous tango from Argentina and the hypnotic flamenco from Spain. Plus lilting, nostalgia-filled musical tributes to Lady Gaga, Elvis Presley and the Blues Brothers. And the icing on the cake: an awe-inspiring performance of Sleeping beauty on Ice by skaters who have won between them no less than 100 world and European gold medals.

Bangkok's 17th International Festival of Dance and Music is indeed a star-studded surprise-filled programme that spans a whole range of genres.  It is a festival that once again reaffirms Bangkok's place as a cultural capital. A festival that, quite simply, promises to sweep you off your feet.
