La Sylphidebest embodies the Romantic Ballet era of the 19th century and is brought to Bangkok by Shanghai Ballet, for their second performance in this festival. This is a rearrangement of the original August Bournonville version by French choreographer Jean-Paul Gravier in 2002. Jean-Paul is a recipient of the National Order of Arts and Letters award from France, and former Director of Ballet National du Rhin.
Shanghai Ballet is recognised as a strong regional dance company and respected for upholding a classical ballet discipline. Their repertoire includes updated versions of classic favourites, and a growing number of works woven with a traditional Chinese element such as A Sigh of Love, The Butterfly Lovers.
The romantic ballet is based on a fairy tale by Charles Nodier and relates how a young Scotsman named James falls in love with the ethereal vision of Sylphide. He deserts his bride Effie at the altar to pursue Sylphide and, determined to possess the elusive creature, uses a magic veil to capture her. However, as soon as it touches her shoulders, Sylphide dies in his arms and James is left alone to ruminate on the loss of his elusive love, and the meaning of true love.
