Mariza, Grammy nominee and worlds leading Fado singer, Portugal

Grammy nominee Mariza brings the music of Fado to Bangkok. Fado traces its modern history to the Portugal of 1820s, but theorists believe the genre has earleir origins. Often described as a kind of Lisbon blues, Fado speaks of saudade (loosely translated as nostalgia in Portuguese) and its nuances longing, sadness, happiness, pain and love. It is the call of the Portuguese soul.
Mariza is acknowledged as the foremost exponent of this music form. Her earthy voice is both seductive and impassioned. All her previous albums - Fado em Mim (2001), Fado Curvo (2003), Transparente (2005) and Concerto Em Lisboa (2006) went Platinum and her current album Terra (2008) looks set to go the same way.
She has received recognition for her talent with a number of awards including the prestigious Medaille de Vermeil from Paris Academy of Arts, Sciences and Letters, and the Order of Henry the Navigator (awarded by President Jorge Sampaio of Portugal).
